Plotter or Planster?

We all have our writing styles, and systems. But when we begin a project, how do you like to attack the problem of staying organized. Do you prefer to write a detailed outline of your story, or are you more chaotic, throwing caution into the wind and just write to see what happens?

I'll admit, I've done both. I've tried the detailed outline. It didn't work for me too well, because I ended up with a totally different story. I've also skipped the outline and just sat down to write. That story ended on a blank white page, like hitting a brick wall at 60 MPH.

I've found what works best for me is what I refer to as a loose outline. I'll have three defined points. Maybe I'll call this The Triangle Approach? I have a catalyst, a start to my story. I'll have an ending point--how do I want the story to end? And I'll have at least one major climatic event. I'll add additional points if I want to introduce the Twist into a story. I've found that using this technique allows me the flexibility that allow my characters some breathing room, so they come to life, and actually write the story for me. But also at the same time, I have the guide-rails for the plot so that I at least know which direction to travel in.

I like to create skeletal outlines. Basic ideas of what to expect, a premise, discussing how / why our characters are together. And then I like to leave some things to the unknown and find out first hand through my character's actions! Sounds like we're similar in that regard. =)

I try to write out a outline for what I want my character(s) to be like, but I typically end up just going with the flow and making things up as I write. I do come out with a description for each character but I know I've changed backstories throughout the years.

I consider myself a plantser when I write. I tend to do less of an outline and more of 'planning out various parts of the story without exactly how they go together' because every time I've ever tried a distinct outline... My characters said 'nope' and it just went so off the rails it was useless.

Basically: Characters get most of the control. I just set up things like what locations are available at the beginning (until they decide something was forgotten), etc.
