Unlike most manga I've read (admittedly, not nearly enough), this is a story that was not only written by an American, but an amateur at that! No, really! Fred Gallagher , who started out as a professional Architect, before venturing out into doing his own thing. This is a story that I love for multiple reasons, one of which being that, here is the American Dream, living in real time! You can literally watch his style progress, from hours-long pencil sketching to inked finals and a very structured format, transform into a wild but clean manga style in his own!
But enough about that. Yes, I admire Fred, but the story. OMG. This is an epic story that just screams the level of crazy that I love. The story is essentially about two recent college graduates, gamers, while unemployed, decide to take an impromptu trip to Japan. Boys will be boys, and they blew all their money on gaming ... junk, and ended up stranded in Japan with no way to get home. The story tells the tale of how these two men survive the crazy world of Japan, finding love, fighting with chibi consciousnesses, and choosing sides between Sony and Sega, all while surviving a potential zombie or vampire outbreak?
Yes, I did say crazy. Another thing I love about this story is the attention to detail that Fred has in each panel. The background of most frames has epic chaos occurring. Godzilla rampaging being one of the most prominent backstories-- if you can call it one, is highly entertaining to me.
