Most role playing games have a system that gives order to chaos around a table for combat scenes. Most people are familiar with the classic set up. You have a special Initiative Stat, or a value that is derived from a Base Stat, to which you make a dice roll, then add the two together. The higher the result, the more first your character's actions are during the Combat Round.

Savage Worlds uses a slightly different mechanic. Instead of rolling dice, you use a a standard deck of Poker Cards. The lower the value, the more first you are.

Cypher System has introduced me to yet another concept. This is a ingenious method, in that the combat round is broken up into three parts. The Adversaries (based on their Level times three), and then the Player Characters who's d20 roll is higher than the Adversaries initiative, and the Player Character's rolls who's results are lower than the Adversaries initiative. This is a really cool method because now Players can coordinate their efforts and use teamwork tactics more reliably. (As you can see, I'm currently a bit biased. Sorry, not sorry. LOL)

What other initiative systems are out there that you've experienced?
