A couple years ago, when MidJourney became all the craze, I fell into the trap of producing high quality, if not sometimes bizarre, anime art. I was curious to see what it would smash together to create. And I used AI because I don't have the skill to crank out what I see in my imagination onto paper or computer screen-- I have the tools, but not the time, because I live in the United States, and I have to work just to survive, even though, I would much rather be using my daylight hours pursuing creative hobbies, such as drawing and writing. Anyway, I digress.

It's come to my recent attention that AI uses a crap ton of water, not to mention electricity, and of course, all those rare-earth elements that make up the graphics processors in order to calculate all of whatever the algorithms do. Also, don't forget that these resources are being taken, forcefully in some cases, from people all around the world by greedy, wealthy individuals who really don't need anything more for several dozens, if not hundreds, of lifetimes. But the use of AI is also unethical on a moral standpoint. AI is literally stealing the work of established artists, who dedicated hundreds, maybe thousands of hours toward practicing and refining their work, just to be scrapped off the Internet into a private database somewhere.

I do still use AI for brainstorming, only because I lack friends to bounce ideas off with, making sure my writing is more tightly written (I can't think of the word that begins with a C right now, and for outlining, only because it has the capability to scour the Internet much faster than I can. Hopefully, I'll correct these issues with this site, as we work to build an audience of like-minded people. And you'll still see the occasional AI avatar or whatever, only because of the vast collection of it I have on my hard drive from all the months of experimentation I did. I don't like to waste anything, even if it does seem to be my time that I'm constantly wasting.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on AI? I know this will probably be a heated topic, so please keep that in mind. I'm not looking to start World War IV.

Generative AI art is interesting. They've added that now to photoshop. Personally I like code AI agents like junie on phpstorm. So amazing to literally not have to do anything but generate an add-on or program. It literally makes it super easy to learn because it does it for you.

But are you actually learning how to implement PHP (assuming it's this based on phpstorm) Like can you code without the AI's assistance. Of course, this may become a moot point in the future, because AI will simply be doing everything that we humans are doing right now...

I stoped using AI art because everything look very similar. In addition to that, I discovered that it steals from the artists to generate it's art. Genuine art is more creative and better in many ways.

Concise! ...Also, I'll be your friend! 😄

As for the question at hand though. I have a somewhat cynical view of 'AI', in that it I think it's a marketing term used to make technology that fundamentally isn't intelligent sound cool. For example, the chatbots like ChatGPT are just a phone predicting the next word you're going to type scaled up by a great deal. Fun, but I don't expect it to revolutionize much. And the way it affects people's minds can get a little scary. I also find the lack of a human's intent and touch somewhat depressing when I see it in art. I look to Amazon warehouses use of AI for what I feel is a more grounded expectation of the evolution of that technology. 🙁 That being said, I've used it a few times, for things I don't intend to take credit for.

I'm not TopSilver, but if I may jump in:

Yes, at least in my case, I make sure that when I code with AI assistance, it's usually something that I already know how to do. AI saves me time in terms of getting it done, but I try my best to make sure that I can do things manually as well.

That is, unless I'm using AI to learn the programming language itself (like with my C# Unity mods), but in that case, I feel like it's justifiable not knowing the language in question because I'm trying to learn it.

The only condition here is I don't want to get to the point where I'm also outsourcing my thinking to AI in addition to my (amateur) code writing, since things would only get worse from that point on.

I think that's a general fear of AI, is just that, "outsourcing thinking" to AI. Artificial Intelligence is a tool, not a replacement! But, I see a lot of our Executives trying to just that.... Replacing workers instead of empowering workers. Hopefully something gives before it's too late and we witness the collapse of Society and possibly Civilization.
