I'm sure anybody born before, like, yesterday is familiar with online purchases. Since I've installed XenForo, I've become aware of the multiple different ways that people are selling their digital wares. Let's check it out.

  • Sold per Unit. This is the typical method I'm used to seeing. You've got a digital dingle-berry and you're selling one copy of it for $20. Once you purchase the dingle-berry, it's yours, for like ever.
  • Sold per Collection. This is something new that I've never seen before. You've got a whole bunch of dingle-berries, like 50, and you're giving access to download them all for 1 year for $100.
  • Sold per Subscription. You've got a bunch of dingle-berries, like above, but you sell access to use any of the dingle-berries for like 1 month.

Which method do you prefer, and can you think of any others that I probably forgot?

I think everywhere now has a subscription to purchase. Ever lose access to the stuff you paid for because you missed a monthly payment? It sucks!😭 I wish we could go back to paying for stuff like we did a few years ago, and it would be ours.

I like buying add-ons where I get 1 year of updates and have to renew each year for new versions. Deals like that don't appear too bad to me at all.

Being subscription method isn't too bad though most developers I've seen charge for each add-on but some add-on creators have that where for a year you get access to all the add-ons. I'd rather just have the specific add-on and don't care for this method too much.

I prefer to buy and retain ownership by paying at once. Subscriptions do not suit me well. In most cases, I lose track of them and I forget to make payment. That is why I prefer paying once and use it as many times as I wanted.

I think this is why many companies have moved toward Subscriptions. They're hoping you forget about the subscription! And, in the case of Adobe, make it nearly impossible to cancel without jumping through nine different sized flaming hoops.
