I picked up this book on a friend's recommendation, and I have to say that although I was a casual fan of all things Science Fiction before I read this book, Orson Scott Card transformed me into the Sci-Fi freakish nerd that I am today.
This is the story about a boy-child who is groomed to be the savior of the entire planet Earth by completely eradicating an entire invading alien species. This first book (of like 14?) dives into Ender's initial training that allows him to complete his mission by the end of the first book. The other books (which I must admit, I've only read up through half of the third book) deals with the consequences of his actions, and the trauma that surrounds him.
I'm sure I'm not doing the story really any justice, but I believe it's an excellent read, and you should totally check it out. I promise that it's a fairly quick read (at least the first two books are.)
